Location decides most of a charging site's success. A well-chosen site can be busy within months; a poor one may never pay back, however good the equipment. Use this checklist before committing to any location.
1. Grid capacity
- What is the existing connection, and how much spare capacity does it have?
- How far is the site from the nearest transformer or substation?
- Would an upgrade or new connection be needed, and how long would it take?
2. Dwell time
- How long do vehicles usually stay at this location?
- Does the charger power match that dwell time?
- Are there amenities that give drivers a reason to wait: food, washrooms, shopping?
3. Traffic and demand
- How many vehicles pass or park here each day, and how many are electric now?
- Is the site on a highway, near a transport hub, or close to residential and office clusters?
- Are there fleets nearby, such as taxis, delivery vans or buses, that could become regular users?
- Where are the nearest competing chargers, and how reliable are they?
4. Visibility and access
- Can drivers see the chargers from the road or the entrance?
- Is entry and exit easy, including for larger vehicles?
- Is the site open and accessible around the clock, and well lit at night?
5. Practical and legal factors
- Does the landowner agree, and on what terms?
- Are there local permissions to obtain?
- Is the ground suitable for foundations and trenching, and is the site safe from flooding?
- Is there mobile network coverage for charger connectivity?
Score every candidate site against the same checklist. It turns a gut feeling into a comparison you can defend to investors and partners.
