Roaming between charging networks, and why interoperability matters for growth

Drivers want to charge anywhere with one app or card. How roaming works, and why open networks grow faster than closed ones.

Imagine needing a different card for every fuel station brand. That is how EV charging feels to many drivers today, with one app per network and a phone full of accounts. Roaming fixes this, and operators who connect their networks gain far more than they give up.

What roaming is

Roaming lets a driver registered with one service use chargers run by another network, and pay through their usual app or account. Behind the scenes, the two parties exchange information about charger locations, availability, tariffs, session data and billing, then settle payments between themselves.

The standards that make it work

  • OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol) connects chargers to a management system. It means hardware from different manufacturers can be run from one platform.
  • OCPI (Open Charge Point Interface) connects networks and driver services to each other. It is the common language for sharing locations, tariffs and sessions between operators.

Networks can connect directly with each other, one partner at a time, or join a roaming hub that links many networks through a single connection.

Why roaming grows your network

  • More drivers: every roaming partner's users can now find and use your chargers, which raises utilisation without extra marketing spend.
  • Better coverage for your own users: your drivers can charge beyond your network, which makes your app more useful and keeps them loyal.
  • Visibility: your chargers appear in partner apps and maps, often with live availability.
  • Partnerships: fleet operators and vehicle makers prefer networks their drivers can use without friction.

A closed network has to win every driver by itself. An open network shares the work of building demand with every partner it connects to.

Points to settle with roaming partners

TopicWhat to agree
TariffsHow prices are shown to roaming drivers, and any service fee on top
SettlementHow often you are paid, in what currency, and how disputes are handled
DataWhat session and customer data is shared, and how it is protected
SupportWho the driver calls when a session fails
AvailabilityHow quickly status changes are shared so drivers are not sent to busy or broken chargers

Interoperability starts with hardware

Roaming only works smoothly if the network underneath is open. Choosing OCPP-compliant chargers and a management platform that supports OCPI keeps your options open, lets you switch software providers later, and makes new partnerships a configuration task rather than a rebuild.

How PxT can help

Our EVee Buddy platform supports OCPI integrations, and PxT Energies builds every network on open protocols. We can connect your chargers to roaming partners and handle the technical integration and settlement setup.
