Highway charging in India has grown quickly, and long trips in an EV are now routine for many drivers. A little planning makes the difference between a relaxed journey and an anxious one.
Before you leave
- Know your real range: highway speeds, air-conditioning, hills and a full car all reduce range compared with the brochure figure.
- Plan stops with a buffer: aim to arrive at each charger with a comfortable reserve, not on the last few kilometres.
- Use apps with live status: check that chargers on your route show as available and have recent successful sessions.
- Have a backup: for each planned stop, know the next nearest charger.
- Filter by connector: make sure each charger fits your car.
Choosing good stops
- Sites with more than one fast charger, so one fault or queue does not stop you.
- Food, washrooms and shade, so charging time doubles as a break.
- Well-lit sites if you may arrive at night.
At the charger
Charge to around 80% for the quickest stops, since charging slows as the battery fills. Charge higher only when the next leg needs it. Move your car when you are done so others can charge.
Short, frequent stops are usually faster overall than long ones. Two 25-minute stops to 80% often beat one long stop to 100%.
Carry the basics
- Your car's own charging cable for AC charging at hotels.
- Charging apps installed, logged in and with a payment method set up.
- Your car's roadside assistance number.
