Once chargers are installed and cabled, the site is not yet ready for drivers. Commissioning is the structured process of checking, testing and proving that every part of the station works safely, before it opens to the public.
1. Pre-energisation checks
- Visual inspection of chargers, cabinets, cable terminations and labelling against the approved design.
- Mechanical checks of foundations, mounting, bollards and enclosures.
- Insulation resistance and continuity tests on cables.
2. Earthing and protection
- Earth resistance testing and verification of bonding.
- Testing of protective devices such as breakers and residual current protection.
- Checks of emergency stop functions.
3. Energisation
With approvals in place, the supply is energised step by step: incoming supply, transformer and panels, then each charger. Voltages, phase sequence and metering are checked at every stage.
4. Charger configuration
- Firmware updated to the approved version.
- Power limits, load management and dynamic sharing configured.
- Cooling systems checked on liquid-cooled chargers.
5. Network and payments
- Connection to the management platform over OCPP, with secure communication.
- Tariffs, payment methods and app-less payment tested.
- Roaming listings and live availability confirmed.
6. Live vehicle testing
Real vehicles are charged on every gun, ideally of different makes and power levels, to confirm sessions start, deliver the expected power, stop correctly and bill accurately.
Test with the vehicles your customers actually drive. Compatibility issues show up with real cars, not test equipment alone.
7. Handover
The owner receives test certificates, as-built drawings, equipment manuals, warranty documents and the maintenance plan, and site staff are trained on basic operation and emergency procedures. Monitoring begins from the first session.
How PxT can help
PxT Energies follows a documented commissioning process on every site, and hands over a complete record of tests and approvals.
