Uptime is the product: how preventive maintenance keeps chargers earning

Drivers judge a network by the one charger that did not work. How monitoring and preventive maintenance protect uptime and revenue.

NETWORK STATUS

Installing a charger is the start of its life, not the end of the project. A charger that is offline earns nothing, frustrates drivers and damages trust in the whole network. The networks people rely on are the ones that treat uptime as an engineering target and plan maintenance around it.

Uptime is the product

Drivers do not buy chargers; they buy a working charge, at the moment they need it. Every hour a charger is offline is lost revenue that cannot be recovered, and a lost customer who may not come back. That is why uptime, not charger speed or price, is the number the best operators manage most closely.

Why chargers go offline

Most charging faults are not dramatic hardware failures. They are everyday problems that build up when nobody is watching:

  • Lost mobile connectivity, so the charger cannot authorise sessions.
  • Damaged cables and connectors from heavy daily use or vehicles driving over them.
  • Dust, heat and humidity clogging filters and cooling fans, especially in summer and monsoon.
  • Software and firmware that fall behind, causing compatibility issues with newer vehicles.
  • Upstream power issues such as tripped breakers or voltage fluctuations.

Monitor first, then fix

Every networked charger reports its status to the charge point management system. We watch that data around the clock. Many faults can be cleared remotely with a reset or configuration change, often before a driver notices. When a site visit is needed, the technician arrives knowing the fault and carrying the right parts.

A planned maintenance routine

IntervalTypical tasks
ContinuousRemote status monitoring, fault alerts, session checks
MonthlyCable and connector inspection, screen and payment check, cleaning
QuarterlyFilter and cooling service, firmware review, earthing check
AnnuallyFull electrical inspection, thermal imaging, safety testing

The exact schedule depends on charger type, usage and site conditions. High-power chargers and coastal or dusty sites need closer attention.

A clear uptime target written into a service agreement aligns everyone around the same goal: chargers that work when drivers arrive.

Spare parts and response times

Good maintenance depends on logistics. We keep critical spares stocked regionally and agree response times by site type, so a busy highway hub gets faster attention than a lightly used workplace charger.

Taking over existing networks

Network continuity is one of PxT Energies' specialities. We maintain chargers we have installed and take over networks built by others, bringing them onto our monitoring platform and a planned maintenance routine. If your chargers are underperforming, ask us for a network health check.
